We have a commitment to promoting financial literacy skills to the youth of Australia.
We are proud to be a major sponsor of the Financial Basics Foundation, a registered charity whose aim is to help educate secondary students about responsible financial management.
The best place to teach people about financial literacy is at school. If kids are taught how to manage their money at a young age, we hope this will carry on throughout their lifetimes and help them to make sound financial decisions.
To support financial literacy education in schools, we have sponsored the production of the Financial Basic Foundation’s “Operation Financial Literacy” – a flexible educational resource that is available to all high school teachers free of charge.
Operation Financial Literacy
Operation Financial Literacy is a financial literacy program that combines classroom, community, web and research based activities. It includes detailed teacher notes and student worksheets for nine core modules:
- Financial planning – control your financial success
- Income – where does it come from?
- Budgeting - dividing up the income
- Financial protection - the key to security
- Credit and borrowing - decision and consequences
- Taxation
- Banking - making money work
- Saving and investing
- Financial planning for your future
- Mobile Phones: Being a wise consumer
Additional modules to be released in future include scam awareness, bankruptcy, and entrepreneurship.
Is Operation Financial Literacy for my school?
Absolutely! Operation Financial Literacy is a flexible resource, so secondary school teachers can choose any number or mix of activities to use. As the resource was written and evaluated by Australian educators, it can be incorporated into a range of study areas, including SOSE, Business Studies, Mathematics and Economics.
