Birkdale's only bank increases Bank of Queensland presence

Redland Shire Mayor Don Seccombe today officially opened Birkdale's only bank.

Bank of Queensland now has more full-service branches in Redland Shire than any other bank, with the today's opening of its 101st branch at Birkdale Fair Shopping Centre.

Queensland's own bank already has branches at Cleveland, Capalaba, Alexandra Hills and Victoria Point and is looking at opening further branches in the Bayside suburbs as part of its program to grow its network by 34 branches to 128.

At the community opening celebration, Cr Seccombe congratulated the Bank on its foresight and commitment in supporting Redland Shire.

In its first week of operation, the branch has already attracted great support from the community, mirroring the phenomenal interest afforded the Victoria Point branch when it opened just a few months ago.

Birkdale residents and businesses - without their own bank for nearly three years after the ANZ and National Banks pulled out - heartily welcomed the new branch.

Three years ago, the leafy Bayside suburb suffered the same fate as hundreds of other Queensland communities stripped of essential banking services and devastated socially and economically as people took their shopping to bigger centres which still had banks.

Bank of Queensland has for some time been swimming against this tide of branch closures, enhancing customer service and serving communities abandoned by the "Big 4" bank drain.

Managing Director David Liddy said Bank of Queensland's program of branch openings was a solid indication of its confidence in communities like Birkdale and Victoria Point.

"This is about building communities, about playing a socially responsible role," he said.

"The saying that communities stand behind a Bank that stands behind them has been proven many times in this Shire, and we anticipate the people of Birkdale will likewise get behind their local bank.

Branch manager Ramesh Singh said local businesses in particular would benefit from the convenience and comprehensive personal service his branch offered.

"As a businessman myself, I understand their specific needs and will do my utmost to ensure their every banking need - from cheque accounts to business loans to insurance - is met here at the branch within their own community."
