North Sydney local opens own bank

A Sydney businessman, who started his first job as a cheque officer, has moved his way up the ranks to owning his very own bank branch.

John Dickson will own and manage the new Bank of Queensland Branch which opened today in Walker Street, North Sydney.

Bank of Queensland’s Owner-Managed Branches allow experienced local bankers to both own and manage a Bank of Queensland branch in their local community, ensuring local decision-making and much higher standards of service for customers.

Mr Dickson brings more than 15 years’ experience in the banking and finance industry to the branch and said he was 100 percent committed to offering the best customer service.

“Being a small business, rather than a huge corporation, makes a big difference to the way I am able to serve my customers,” Mr Dickson said.

“The idea of owning your own bank branch and being able to make decisions based on the local market is something most people only dream of,” he said.

“In recent years, the banking industry has changed significantly, shifting from personal customer service to telephone and internet banking. However, it is even more important now for a client to receive face-to-face contact, as well as internet and phone banking.

“I will be available for my customers whenever they need me, even after-hours, and I won’t force them to use an automated call centre when they need assistance,” he said.

Bank of Queensland Managing Director David Liddy said the North Sydney branch will bring the number of BOQ branches in NSW to 14.

“We now have a total of 166 branches and are on our way to have 240 interstate branches open by August 2006,” Mr Liddy said.

Other Bank of Queensland branches are due to open in Burwood, Castle Hill, Campbelltown, and Maroubra Junction over the next few months.
