Bowral resident buys bank to improve services

Bowral’s first franchised bank is just weeks from opening for business and offering the community a fresh approach to banking, with local banker Chris Benton putting the finishing touches to his Bank of Queensland Owner-Managed Branch™.

The branch, in Wingecarribee Street, will offer local businesses and residents something different – a locally-owned, service-focused bank.

Owner-Manager Chris Benton said the community’s growing disaffection with the big banks had drawn them to try and find a better service experience.

“Many Australians are unhappy with long queues and poor and impersonal treatment they receive from their bank and I decided to do something about it,” Mr Benton said.
“I wanted my customers to receive the best service and the only way I could achieve that was to be my own boss.

“Being Owner-Manager of a bank branch is unique. It allows me to focus on the community, making decisions that best suit and benefit them,” he said.

“This different, more personalised way of banking will be a nice change, especially for the small businesses and investors who are not well looked after by the major banks.

“Customers have direct access to their very own bank manager and are also encouraged rather than penalised for coming into the branch.

“I see a lot of potential in Bowral and am here to support the development and growth of the local area as well as the wider community,” Mr Benton said.

The branch is a full service branch, offering highly competitive commercial and retail products, an ATM, and Internet banking facilities.

Managing Director David Liddy said Bank of Queensland’s ongoing strong expansion in New South Wales and Victoria was central to its growth strategy.

“With our accelerated growth in Queensland giving us a full network in this State, it was logical to expand into the larger markets of New South Wales and Victoria to target future growth,” Mr Liddy said.

“Our unique Owner-Managed model™ enables us to offer customers a level of service corporate-owned big bank branches can’t.”
