In Australia cheque usage is declining

The payment landscape in Australia is changing. Customers are opting out of using cheques and choosing to make payments through simpler and faster digital methods.

From 4 December 2025, we’re making changes to account cheque access:

  • New customers can no longer open accounts with cheque access
  • Existing customers can no longer request new cheque access on their existing accounts
  • Replacement cheque books will not be automatically issued to existing accounts with a cheque facility

FAQs

1. When are cheques being phased out?

The Australian Federal Government is winding down the cheque system to modernise Australia’s payments system. As part of this industry-wide transition, BOQ is phasing out cheque book services in line with government timelines and customer banking trends.

2. Can I still use my existing cheque book?

Yes, you can continue using your existing cheque book until further notice. However, you won’t automatically receive a replacement cheque book once your current cheque book runs out.

3. I don't have online banking set up yet. How do I do that?

We can help you register for online banking - it’s easy to do. Please contact your closest BOQ branch during opening hours or call our friendly customer contact centre on 1300 55 72 72 from between 8am–8pm Monday to Friday and 9am–5pm on a Saturday (AEDT).

Queensland Solicitor's Trust Accounts must first gain an authorisation letter from the Queensland Law Society. You can find details on how to apply for authorisation here.

If you currently have view-only access for NSW PAMD, NSW Solicitor's Trust Account, or QLD PAMD Trust Accounts, please contact us for assistance.
